Little Creek One Room School House Project

The HARALSON COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION has approved support and fund raising  for relocating and restoring the LITTLE CREEK SCHOOL HOUSE

Project Description:  To relocate and restore the LITTLE CREEK ONE-ROOM SCHOOL HOUSE now located in Haralson County on GA 100, .8 of a mile from the Polk County Line.  It is a 20'x36' structure, with a roof line of about 20' tall.  The basic structure is sound and assessed as moveable, and restorable.  However, the appearance of the building is poor.  It is proposed to relocate to downtown Buchanan, GA adjacent to the Commission office.

The School House will be used for many purposes, including class visitation, on-site teaching,   instruction,  research, and as a  resource center for teachers and others.  We hope it will become a focal point for promoting additional  excellence in academics and character building.  We are attaching a further description of the project, and  information on reference material on ONE-ROOM SCHOOLS, and encourage further research on the internet.  It is hoped that teachers, where appropriate, will encourage student research on the rich history of the one-room schools in our county and across the nation and world.

Phase One:   The budget for Phase One is approximately $12,000.  This includes cost of relocation, site preparation, and repairs essential for securing building.  Phase Two, although figures are  not complete,  can approach $50,000 plus, depending on furniture and materials donated.

Fund Raiser :   We are proposing an exciting  motivation plan for raising funds that can be individual, by class, and by each local school: WE WILL FEATURE LITTLE CREEK OWNER SHARES; PRE-K-6 MAY USE "COINS FOR LITTLE CREEK SCHOOL HOUSE" buckets, and if feasible also the $10.00 certificates.  EACH STUDENT WHO RAISES OR GIVES $10.00  WILL GET ONE LITTLE CREEK STUDENT SHARE, AND AN ADDITIONAL STUDENT-SHARE FOR EVERY $10.00 RAISED.  ALL ADULTS AND/OR ORGANIZATIONS MAY BUY REGULAR SHARES AT $25.00 EACH.  SHARE-CERTIFICATES WILL BE ISSUED AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE FUND RAISER ON MAY 25th, THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL.

The class that raises the most money will receive a special plaque, with a replica placed in the School House.  The local school that raises the most money  per student will receive a plaque and be placed in a LITTLE CREEK HALL OF FAME.  All donations are tax deductible, and checks should be written to LITTLE CREEK SCHOOL FUND.

Historical notes from MILESTONES in Haralson Education:   A document location in the HISTORICAL COUNTY ARCHIVES indicates: "In 1866 the State Legislature set up a Common School System in Ga.  More schools were then erected in Haralson County.  In 1870 Haralson County selected a count school commissioner, a county board of education, local trustees and a board of examiners (for setting up rules for certification of teachers)."  In 1871 there were 23 schools in the County with 1016 pupils, all in one-room teacher schools."  "The Little Creek School was consolidated with Poplar Springs in 1932... Chandlers Chapel, New Caanan, and Little Creek merged with Poplar Springs... transportation was provided by Cliff Holcombe.  He was paid $125. a month."  A reasonable guess is that Little Creek was among the schools started in 1870.  Records show that a number of schools were built at this time.  This is based on other evidence of growth in the community, including a post office.  Additional research is needed on this and is ongoing.
